Southern African Society for Medieval and Renaissance Studies

Proposals for papers are invited.

These can fall within any area of interest and discipline that could conceivably be relevant to the topic:

Areas of interest may include, but are not limited to:

Attitudes to food and drink, eating and drinking.
Literal, metaphorical, symbolic, or sacramental understandings and uses of food and drink.
Producing food: growing food, farming production animals.
Hunting.
Gathering food.
Cannibalism.
Gluttony and asceticism.
Conspicuous consumption.
Self-sufficiency (as a social, religious, political, or literary ideal).
Forbidden fruit.
Importing and exporting food.
Travel, exploration, and new foods and drinks.
Wine and beer: farming, production, trade, consumption.
Transporting, storing, and preserving food and drink.
Food preparation.
Meals, sharing meals, the rituals and ceremonies (including music) associated with sharing meals.
Food and drink as a marker of identity and/or reason for prejudice.
Speaking and writing about food and drink: the language of food and drink, eating and drinking.
Recipes.
Human and animal medicine and food/drink.
The skeleton at the feast.
Depictions or explorations of any of the above in music, literature, or any form of art.
